Parry McCluer used an impressive offensive fourth quarter to turn a close game into a blowout over the Auburn Eagles, 27-8, in Buena Vista on Friday.
The Blues opened up the scoring in the game towards the end of the first quarter, when senior Brandon Staton scored on a long 25-yard run. A missed extra point left the McCluer lead at 6-0.
Auburn would answer just before halftime, when Jacob Mullins would plunge in from one yard out. Zac Blankenship would punch in the two-point conversion and the Eagles took an 8-6 lead into the halftime break.
The two teams would come out of the locker room a little stale. Neither team would get anything going in the third quarter, as both teams traded possessions. However, it would be the fourth quarter that made the difference.
McCluer would break out of their slump in a big way in the quarter, as Blues quarterback Tyler Kerr would connect on a 60-yard touchdown pass. A incomplete throw on a two-point conversion made the McCluer lead four with an unusual score of 12-8.
That would be only the beginning for McCluer, who would get the ball back and score in less than two minutes, as Bryan Tolley scored on a 30-yard run. The Blues capped off the quarter with a 9-yard run by Kerr to seal the game and the win.
Auburn has now dropped four straight games since their 16-13 opening season win against Craig County. The road only gets tougher from here, as they will next face Floyd County at home next week.
The Buffalos were 13-1 last season when they handed the Eagles a 47-14 loss at home. However, they are now a former shell of themselves, having only a 1-4 record this year. It will be a desperation game, as both teams are in dire need of a win.
Floyd County’s losses came this season to tough competition in Christiansburg (17-14), Patrick County (12-7), George Wythe (18-10), and Fort Chiswell (24-12). Their lone win was against Rural Retreat (42-15).

D.J. Palmer and Kevin Adkins both scored three touchdowns, while Dontae Carter threw for two of them as the Radford Bobcats rolled to a huge non-district win over Grayson County, 42-14, at home on Friday.
Consistency was a key to the game, as the Bobcats scored 21 points in the first and second half. Carter completed 8 of 12 passes for 103 yards. He and Adkins both rushed for a game-high 58 yards.
The Bobcats also forced two turnovers in the passing game. Senior Julian Minter led the team with six tackles and two sacks, while fellow senior Josh Oliver had four tackles and two sacks.
In their two wins this season, the Bobcats have scored 42 both times in triumphs over Galax and Grayson County. They have also won two of their last three games and improve their record to 2-3 on the season.
Radford’s next game will be their biggest test so far, as they open up Three Rivers District play against Eastern Montgomery. The Mustangs are undefeated this season at 5-0 and have looked impressive in doing so.
Eastern Montgomery has scored an average of 50 points and allowed a total of 62 points in their five games this season. The Mustangs are powered by junior quarterback Shawn Christian, who has thrown for 1,150 yards and 18 touchdowns this season. He is also a dual threat, rushing for five touchdowns on the season as well.
Last year, the Bobcats lost to the Mustangs on the road, 42-10. That loss eventually kept them out of the playoffs and helped Eastern Montgomery get into the
