It certainly was “Highlander Heaven” for Glenvar on Friday at home, as they used an impressive first half to blast by Auburn and hand the Eagles their second district loss of the season, 41-0, on Friday.
Glenvar (6-1, 1-1) would get things going very early in the game, as it took them only 1:52 to get on the board. Junior Phillip Tarpley would score from 19 yards out to give the Highlanders the early 7-0 advantage after the extra point.
Corey Bolden would match his teammate’s touchdown at the end of the first quarter. Bolden would plunge into the end zone from five yards out, giving Glenvar a two touchdown advantage heading into the second quarter.
Three more Glenvar players would get in on the scoring in the quarter. Quarterback Cameron Holshouser would connect with Richard Gleason for the 28-yard pass and grab at the beginning of the quarter. This missed kick made the lead 20-0 in favor of the home team.
Auburn would attempt to get things going, but a Cody Harris pass would go off course and end up in the hands of Glenvar defender Chris Dumler, who trampled 65 yards for the defense score for the Highlanders. Glenvar added one more touchdown before the half, as Tim Woods scored on a 12-yard run. The score was 34-0 in favor of the Highlanders heading into the break.
Auburn would attempt to move the ball offensively, but the Eagles just couldn’t get anything going offensively, as neither team would score in the third quarter. Tommy Roach would score the game’s final touchdown, as he broke free for a 44-yard touchdown run at the midpoint of the fourth quarter.
In the end, the Glenvar defense shut down the Eagle’s attack. Auburn was held to just 77 total yards of offense in the game and didn’t score a single point. The win moves Glenvar to an impressive 6-1 on the season.
Auburn’s next district challenge will be at home against the Giles Spartans, who are coming off of a tough 36-28 district loss on the road the Eastern Montgomery. Giles comes into the game at 4-3, 1-1 in district play. The Spartans have shown many flashes of brilliance this season, as the own victories over the likes of Glenvar, George Wythe, and Narrows.

After an impressive win last week against the formerly undefeated Eastern Montgomery, the Radford Bobcats continued their roll on Friday, picking up their second straight district win in a tough 25-14 win over Floyd County.
Bobcats (4-3, 2-0) quarterback Dontae Carter would get the scoring going with his feet, as the junior found the end zone from one yard out to put the Bobcats up 6-0 after a missed extra point.
The Buffaloes (2-5, 1-1) would answer though with running back Chandler Jones. Jones would rush into the end zone from two yards out, as the Buffaloes took the 7-6 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Radford would go change their strategy for a bit and go to the air. Carter would find Sam Mumpower for a 29-yard pass and grab. Another missed two-point conversion would make the score 12-7 going into the halftime break.
While Radford mixed up their strategy, the Buffaloes would keep with the running game. Chandler Jones would reach the end zone once again, diving in from three yards out, as the Buffaloes took the 14-12 lead.
The fourth quarter would mark the turning point in the game for Radford. After holding Floyd to a three-and-out, the Bobcats would go to the ground again, as Kevin Adkins broke free for a 26-yard touchdown. Once again, a two-point conversion would fail and Radford held a slim lead 18-14.
Another three-and-out for Floyd would lead to yet another score, as Sam Mumpower would run this time for a 4-yard score. The extra point made the score 25-14. Floyd just couldn’t seem to get things going on the ground and the Bobcats held strong on defense to seal the victory.
The Bobcats had an extremely balanced attack in the game, as they rushed for 169 yards in the game and Dontae Carter passed for 160. Adkins led the Bobcats in the running game by rushed for 99 yards a touchdown in the game.
Despite starting off the season 1-3, the Bobcats have now won three straight contests and are in the “driver’s seat” as far as the Three Rivers District goes because they are the only 2-0 team in district play. Eastern Montgomery, Glenvar, Giles, and Floyd County are all 1-1, while Auburn is 0-2.
The Bobcat’s opponent this Friday will be Glenvar. For the second straight season, the Bobcats will travel to play against the Highlanders. Glenvar is doing extremely well at 6-1, 1-1 in the district. Last week, they shut down Auburn, 41-0, in route to their first district win.
Radford will look to repeat their performance of a season ago, when they shut out the Highlanders, 36-0, on the road last season.
