Cougar JV defeats Colonels in “Clash” prelude

DUBLIN – In what was a warm up to the “Cougar Clash” varsity action on Monday, the Lady Cougar junior varsity basketball team played a tough contest against William Fleming. After falling behind in the third quarter, the Colonels would attempt to pull back in the game with a impressive fourth quarter.

Despite the late Colonel surge, the Cougars scored enough points to keep their third quarter lead and hold on for their fifth victory of the season, winning 37-33 at home.

Both teams played extremely tight in the first half. However, the Cougars would manage to take an early 10-6 lead in the first quarter. Carli Brewer had five points and Sarah Wright had three points for Pulaski.

In the second quarter, Fleming would pull back in the game. The Colonels would score eight points in the quarter. The Cougars only score four points in the quarter, as the two teams were knotted up at the 14-14 at halftime.

As it was in the first quarter, the Cougars outscored the Colonels. Pulaski would score ten points in the quarter, as Brewer scored six of those points. The defense was strong for the Cougars as well, as they only allowed three points from Fleming in the quarter. Pulaski would take a seven point lead into the third quarter.

For the second time in the game though, Fleming would surge back despite playing a bad third quarter to start out the half. What had been a tough three point performance in the third quarter turned into a strong 16 point offensive outpour.

That would cut into the Cougar lead, but Pulaski would score 13 points of their own in the final quarter of play. Lauren Foster scored five points in the quarter, while Brewer added four points. That fourth quarter scoring, combined with the lead garnered in the third, kept Pulaski out front for the tough 37-33 win.

Brewer led the Cougars with 15 of their 37 points in the game. Savannah Jones added six points and both Tori Duncan and Lauren Foster scored five points each.

The team will play before the “Cougar Clash” begins for the next two days. They will play Patrick Henry on Tuesday and Graham on Wednesday. Both games will be at 12:30 p.m.
