Blue Devils “D” tames the Wildcats, 24-6

GATE CITY – The Blue Devils won their opening Lonesome Pine District last week against and Coeburn and looked to keep that streak in tact Friday against Pound. The Devils would do so, 24-6, in front of a home crowd at Gate City.

“Our defense boosted our confidence,” said Colobro about the way his defense played in the game. “We forced a lot of punts and only gave up 6 points. Defensively our kids did a great job.”

Pound’s first play from scrimmage was a forced fumble, showing how effect that defensive was. Gate City also forced two other fumbles throughout the game.

Not only did Gate City get the job done on defense, but the offense was sparked by 271 yards rushing on the ground. Tyler Parks had 21 carries for 131 yards and a 35-yard touchdown run, the games opening score.

Tihlee Anderson added 120 yards on 16 rushes on the ground. Anderson completed 6 of 9 passes and also had a 5-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Estepp.

Although they played well, Coach Nick Colobro thinks there can be some improvement on the offensive side of the ball.

“Offensively, we need to punch the ball into the end zone,” said Coach Colobro. “We need to finish each and every play.”

Pound Coach Jason Mullins wanted his team to play the same way in the first half as they did in the second.

“I am pleased with the 2nd half our game,” said Coach Mullins. “We have to play a complete game to compete at the level we want to.”

Gate City has now won two game in a row, making them 2-1 overall and 2-0 in the LPD. Pound drops to 1-2 overall and 0-2 in the LPD.

Gate City will have an off week and return to action September 22 away at Lee High School.
