Lee, Virginia – After having a week off, Gate City came out to a slow start, but warmed up quickly as the Blue Devils defeated the Lee Generals, 34-14.
“I had some doubts about the team, after having an off week,” said coach Nick Colobro. “I thought our kids adjusted well, both offensively and defensively.”
Lee opened up the game with an impressive nine play, 72-yard drive. That would give Lee the game’s opening score and the lead, 6-0. The extra point was missed, however. The first quarter would go back and forth, with the result being a 7-6 score.
“We started the game out pretty well,” said Lee coach Bobby Sanders. “We put together some really good drives and great defensive series.”
It looked as if the Generals would be a tough task for the Blue Devils, but all would be silenced in the 2nd quarter. Gate City would score 21 unanswered points on Lee, all of which were rushing touchdowns by Tyler Parks. The Blue Devils would take a dominating 28-6 lead before heading to break.
Coming out of the locker room, Lee had a change of mindset. After a Gate City fumble, Lee would open up the second half with an eight play drive, leading to Chaz Garrett 2-yard touchdown run. The Generals would also convert on a two-point conversion. However, for Lee, that would be their last score of the game.
Gate City tacked on one last score in the 3rd quarter, a Tihlee Anderson 1-yard run, and held Lee scoreless in the fourth to take the victory.
“The kids did a great job of coming off of the ball and they knew what their assignments were.” said Colobro. “Things worked out pretty well for us.”
Although Lee lost the game, coach Bobby Sanders was very optimistic about his team’s attitude during their game.
“The scoreboard doesn’t always tell the true test of a team,” said Sanders. “As long as we don’t quit or don’t give up like we did tonight, we are going to be a good football team.”
Gate City will be at Virginia High School next Friday, while Lee will play host to Marion in their annual homecoming game.
